During the last two decades, we faced massive datafication and networked digital
technologies. The subject of ‘we’ refers not only to humans, but also beyond humans.
In a hyper-connected environment, how might collaborations between humans,
nonhumans, and machines create an alternative planetary living? By imagining
new eco-social structures based on the question, we speculate about interspecies
futures, whether through imagination, talking, listening, scientific researching and
humor. Likewise, we examine prescientific cultures - animisms, myths, beliefs - to see how the world was connected in a holistic way, and what a post-digital earth can learn
from that. In our audiovisual works, workshops, online platforms, and cross-elemental
works, we explore those emerging practices that are full experiences, sensible, and
relatable through utopian and dystopian scenarios.

The Backpack of Wings is an artistic research project that investigates communication with non-human beings. Inspired by new tracking technologies for wildlife and earthquake myths from East Asia, the project combines current scientific research with speculative future scenarios.

Since ancient times, there have been reports that animals can foresee natural disasters before humans. This assumption forms the basis for many legends and myths but is also studied in today’s science. Using mobile measurement systems, also known as telemetry systems, data is collected: animals are measured, analyzed, and tracked. This provides insights into animal behavior, also in correlation with human activities and climatic changes.&#38;nbsp;

However it also provokes a lot of questions: How far is the intervention of human beings into non-humans acceptable? Will the animals be perceived as essential members of human society? Will they be revered as divine agents for predicting the future, or simply as measuring tools? And above all, could it be a proper solution for the opaque future or is it another anthropocentric techo-fixational illusion?


Based on mythological traditions and scientific findings, Jeong and Yuk develop fictional scenarios: using telemetry data, natural disasters are predicted in the near future, or a network is developed in the distant future that digitally connects animals and humans: an Internet of Animals. This technology would redefine the relationship between humans and animals and the way we deal with the climate crisis and its impacts.

The whole project is presented as an multidimensional installation through several works: The film “The Backpack of Wings: Modern Mythology” depicts a near future, and a further future with the installations “Pĭlacommúnĭtas”, “Super Pĭlacommúnĭtas”, “Nephesh”, “2022 Artifact”. The workshop “The Backpack of Wings: Sensory Networks” puts the lens on one migratory bird by using the GPS data, and invites the participants to create an imaginary storytelling.

Pĭlacommúnĭtas (2022)

&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;The old history of understanding other species through human’s lens has expanded to datafy them. Old mythical beliefs that the veiled species can respond to human’s wishes, transformed into an aspiration to shape a networked cluster. Pĭlacommúnĭtas is a future network, in which all species are entangled and communicate. In Pĭlacommúnĭtas, species do not only depend on their own senses, but share their ability as open source data. The hyperconnected structure should facilitate the prediction of natural disasters, and ultimately sustainably maintain the planet earth. However, the bio-data based network is not able to provide an eventual answer to the faced dilemmas, but shifts them to the further future. It tries and fails and tries again, just as it used to be.

&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;The old history of understanding other species through human’s lens has expanded to datafy them. Old mythical beliefs that the veiled species can respond to human’s wishes, transformed into an aspiration to shape a networked cluster. Pĭlacommúnĭtas is a future network, in which all species are entangled and communicate. In Pĭlacommúnĭtas, species do not only depend on their own senses, but share their ability as open source data. The hyperconnected structure should facilitate the prediction of natural disasters, and ultimately sustainably maintain the planet earth. However, the bio-data based network is not able to provide an eventual answer to the faced dilemmas, but shifts them to the further future. It tries and fails and tries again, just as it used to be.

SUPER Pĭlacommúnĭtas (2023)

&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;In Super Pĭlacommúnĭtas, a multispecies band makes its debut, featuring animals as performers in a hyperconnected
world.

The animals’ movements in Super Pĭlacommúnĭtas are based on actual K-pop performances. K-pop idols, are seen as heroes of a subculture, representing a futuristic and rebellious image that appeals to teenagers as an alternative to mainstream Western pop. 
However, these idols are also carefully produced by a massive entertainment industry, trained to perform in perfect sync with each other. This dual identity—being both countercultural icons and products of a highly controlled system—mirrors the speculative idea in
Super Pĭlacommúnĭtas.
